Caught the Dragon (For My Daughter Claire-Louise)

As fresh as a flower
In the light of the morning
On the edge of the brink
A chasm is yawning
Another young lamb
To the slaughter is led
Another man's daughter
On the poppy is fed

No marks on her body
Just scars on her brain
Don't raise the alarm
She's not insane
Another young victim
Who's overwrought
Out chasing the dragon
And she the one caught

Another young victim
With a head full of smack
Who's not moving forward
And there's no going back
She struggles on through
She tries to get by
Urged on by the craving
For the poppies don't lie.

One minutes she's nice
The next she's a pain
No marks on her body
Just scars on her brain
She steals from her parents
Though not for kicks
She stole from her parents
To get her next fix

So she shuffles on home
With her small bag of brown
She'd bought from her dealer
From some other town
All sweaty and shaking
She takes her next smoke
Out chasing the dragon
And she the one caught

I've seen it before
And I'll see it again
There's no rhyme or reason
For this kind of pain
What pleasure is gained
From this kind of sin
For she is no hero
It's just heroin

As fresh as a flower
In the light of the morning
On the edge of the brink
A chasm is yawning
Oh send for the doctors
And call for the shrinks
Another man's daughter
Is reaching the brink
