Winter Surprise.

The sun, lights up the valley,

Casting down its golden glow.

The fir trees gently tremble,

Under their covering of snow.

The piercing cry of a pheasant,

As from its cover; breaks free.

While a herd of nervous red deer,

Their eyes, straining to see.

Against the myriad diamonds,

sparkling on the ground.

Their sensitive ears twitching,

Listening - for the slightest sound.

With trepidation, they ventured forward,

Towards the sound of the beck.

On approaching the edge of the water,

They lowered their slender necks.

To partake of the icy waters,

That tingled their cold tender lips.

While a majestic red stag watched over them,

Silently, they continued to sip.

When, all of the herd had finished,

He too, then took his turn.

Then summoned up his gathering,

And once more to the woods, returned.

One by one they follow him,

Into deeper cover they go.

And the only signs left behind them,

Were their hoof prints in the snow.

Meanwhile. High above the tree line,

A buzzard scans, the valley floor.

Hunting to find a morsel,

To survive until the thaw.

And as the orb rose higher,

Its warmth, on the earth was felt.

Mother nature’s beauty showing,

As the snow, begins to melt.
